Kim Seong Eun's Notes on Korean Heritage Jewelry
Twenty-five years of observations, standards, and craftsmanship behind Korean heritage jewelry.
The norigae is one of Korea's defining ornaments, suspended from the ribbon or waist of hanbok so that it moves with the body. While much Western jewelry is fixed directly to the wearer, the norigae occupies the space between clothing and body, drawing lines and color through every step. It was at once an adornment, a talisman, and a vessel for personal and familial wishes.
At its center are precious materials such as jade, coral, amber, and pearl. Jade carried wishes for peace and integrity; coral for vitality and protection; amber for warmth and longevity. Butterflies, bats, plum blossoms, peonies, and fish formed another symbolic language, invoking marital harmony, abundant fortune, prosperity, and generations to come.
A samjak norigae brings three distinct ornaments into a single composition. When jade, coral, and amber—and their respective colors and meanings—are placed together, the result is not simply a larger ornament. It becomes a complete system of blessings offered to a bride and her future household. The quality of a samjak depends not only on the three stones, but also on their scale and weight, the length and color of the tassels, and the balance created across the body.
The tassel is not a secondary component. Selecting and dyeing silk thread, twisting it, and forming knots and falls require an artisan's knowledge entirely distinct from stone or metalwork. Density, resilience, and subtle differences in color determine the refinement of the whole piece. At a time when the passing of highly skilled tassel masters makes certain traditional techniques impossible to reproduce exactly, each surviving norigae also carries the value of an endangered craft.
A NASCHENKA norigae is not an accessory intended merely to fill the space of a garment. It is a vertical composition uniting exceptional natural stones, silverwork, and silk. It blesses a new beginning at a wedding and, with time, passes to another generation carrying the memories of a family.
